Foodie Pen Pals: March 2015

It’s that time of the month again! (kinda..)

Foodie Pen Pal time! So, I didn’t realize you had to sign up each month (mega fail), so no February Foodie Pen Pal for me Sad smile But still, this is really late for March, I know. There was a bit of a mix up with the delivery: It was supposed to be delivered to my moms house while I was home over Spring Break, but my mom was on a (last minute, unplanned) vacation, and I just happened to not be home the hour they delivered it! Darn Sad smile unfortunately, we didn’t realize this until the weekend, and only I could go pick it up from the post office (not my dad), so I came back to school and waited for my mom to come back to pick it up, then she came to visit me last weekend and brought my box!

The anticipation paid off! It was well worth the wait! (of course, I still wish I didn’t have to!)

My pen pal this month was from Austin, Texas. I was stoked to be able to try goodies from down there! I visited last summer and love the smoky, tex-mex food, and know there’s a good amount of healthy snack demand, too. My pen pal was super sweet and great at communicating with me!

So at last, here’s what I got:

Rio Grande Ruby Red Grapefruit!

I have yet to eat this, mostly because I’d like to have it for breakfast, and don’t have time. I cant wait though, because GOOD Grapefruit is DELICIOUS!

Texas pecans (from her parents trees!!)

First, I was kinda like, “eh”, because I’m not a huge pecan or walnut fan. I gave them a try since they were fresh and local, and boy was I happily surprised. They tasted so fresh, I think I’ve must’ve mostly had stale pecans. Crunchy, creamy, not bitter at all, so I shared them with my parents!

Coconut Macadamia Nut Energy Bar.

I loved that it had pumpkin, sunflower and hemp seeds, so I tried it, passed it on. Sorry! Macadamia and Coconut were prominent ingredients and not my fav.

Blueberry Energy Bar

this was so good! It was quite big and dense, but I loved the simple ingredients! It wasn’t too sweet, but I do wish there were more blueberries. However, it was honestly delicious!

Lemon Rain Dance

Okay girl, how did you know I love these?! I buy this brand of “Almond Cookie Pow Wow ” Bars, and even made my own because I’m so obsessed! I’ve never seen the lemon before! It’s basically the same, but with cashews instead of almonds, and lemon added. IT WAS DELICIOUS! Like sweet, spring rain in a bite. Delicious! I wish I’d tried them before, so thank you!!

(The 3 bars above were all made in Texas! I loved that!)

Mango Habanero Kale Chips

I only buy certain kale chips because most are nut/seed heavy. Looking at the nutrition facts, they didn’t seem that way, so I was excited to try it! Verdict? I ate the whole dang bag in 1 sitting. The flavors were so well balanced, and I hate to be redundant, but it was delicious! It was not too creamy or sweet, and it had just the perfect amount of heat and bite. Something I would definitely buy for myself, occasionally!

And of course, made in Austin Smile

– Lastly, what I am most excited to play with and use: homemade Jalapeno powder!

Again, from her dad’s chili plants! I cant wait to try this in crackers and soups and stews!!

In all, it was a brilliant basket! I loved all of the Austin goodies, thank you so much! (The next post will be up a bit late too)
